Growing with the Community

2007 Passenger Traffic

Second quarter results are in with passenger counts for the past 12 months standing at 999,765 — just short of the 1 million mark! This rolling 12-month passenger volume has been increasing for 42 consecutive months, starting in January 2004. The growth rate over the past 3 years is in excess of 30%!

Passenger Statistics table

The strong and vibrant economic climate of Saskatoon and the entire province is reflected in the second quarter stats.

  • May was an exceptional month for air travel at our Saskatoon Airport with an average of more than 2,800 passengers per day flying into or out of our city. The 12.7% increase over last year represents the third busiest month ever — just behind January and February of this year. Historically, May is a slow month leading in to the busy summer vacation months.
  • The trend continues into June with passenger loads up by 10.5% over the same month last year, averaging close to 3,000 passengers per day.
  • Summer air service was enhanced with additional daily Air Canada Jazz flights to Calgary and the "Red Eye" flight to Toronto.
  • Increased frequency of flights and new destination points have increased passenger traffic on flights within Saskatchewan and the north by 22%.
  • Both May and June reported increased aircraft movements in excess of 20%.

Canada Remembers International Air Show logo

The 2007 Cameco Canada Remembers International Air Show in salute of our veterans will be held Aug. 18-19. The line-up of performers is impressive with appearances by such acts as the Snowbirds, Sky Hawks and a CF-18 Hornet.

This summer's show will be the 13th annual event and last opportunity to experience the thrills and excitement of this internationally-acclaimed project until it next occurs in the summer of 2009. There will be no 2008 show due to runway construction at the airport. For more information about the show, visit our website at www.yxe.ca.

Did you know?   The Books of Remembrance lie in the Memorial Chamber in the Peace Tower on Parliament Hill. Together the seven books commemorate the lives of Canadians who, since Confederation, have made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country in uniform. These books are accessible to the public through the internet at www.vac-acc.gc.ca/remembers.

Pack Your Bags for Summer!

logo

Did you know over 20 million air travellers will pass through Canadian airports over the nine weeks of summer? To contribute to a smooth and efficient screening operation, CATSA (Canadian Air Transport Security Authority) and the Saskatoon Airport encourage travellers to know what to pack and what to expect at the pre-board screening checkpoint. In particular, ongoing restrictions remain on liquids, gels and aerosols. This includes bottled water and sunscreen. Liquid items are permitted in carry-on luggage only when packed in containers with a capacity of 100ml/100 grams (3.4 oz.) or less. Containers must fit comfortably in a clear and resealable one-litre plastic bag. One bag is allowed per person.

Table of Contents
  • FLY DRY. Bottled water and other beverages are not permitted through the pre-board screening checkpoint.
  • Sunscreen and insect repellent should be packed in your checked baggage.
  • Pocket knives, scissors, fishing hooks and other sharp objects must be packed in checked baggage.
  • Toy guns and weapons ammunition are not permitted in carry-on baggage.
  • Sports equipment such as golf clubs and baseball bats should be packed in checked baggage.
  • Cameras and film can be packed in your carry-on baggage. The x-ray equipment is safe for film.
  • Flammable camping items such as gas containers for grills and strike-anywhere wooden matches are not allowed in carry-on or checked baggage.

"Snowbusters" BBQ

Approximately 180 individuals braved a downpour of rain at the "Snowbusters" barbeque hosted by the Saskatoon Airport Authority (SAA) on May 29. As the barbeque was in appreciation of everyone's efforts last January during the "Blizzard of 2007", it seemed somehow fitting that the weather would also be a little on the "wild side". Thanks to the SAA maintenance crew and the summer students, the barbeque was moved inside the maintenance shed where everyone could stay dry and warm.

Water Bomber Loading Dock

Saskatoon Airport Authority (SAA) has provided the Saskatchewan Environment Convair 580 Water Bombers with a water loading point at the airport. A hose connection has been facilitated at the Airport Fire Hall with sufficient hose to reach Taxiway B. Airport firefighters were trained on loading procedures in May. Similar arrangements have been made at the Regina Airport, giving a 30-minute response coverage for most of southern Saskatchewan.

Did you know?   Scheduled transit service makes travel to and from the airport easy. Saskatoon Transit "Click & Go" service is linked to the SAA website at www.yxe.ca.

R.A.K. (Random Acts of Kindness)

May 27, 2007: Comments from Flo Doucette, Prince Albert, SK.

Just a note of appreciation to you and your staff for looking after my elderly parents before they boarded their flight to Comox, B.C…. My husband and I both appreciate what your staff did by going out of their way to guide my parents through security and then accompany them to board their flight. Both my parents were very pleased with the very professional and courteous service given to them by you and your staff.
