2006 Passenger Traffic

The Saskatoon Airport Authority is delighted to see 2006's total passenger traffic continuing to climb, setting even higher records.

• January 2006 still holding as our record best month at 83,621 passengers
• April 2006 was a record month compared to all previous April's and more than 25% ahead of just 3 years ago.
• Another great month, May's passenger traffic, set the seventh consecutive month of record passenger volumes.
• June 2006 shuffles the deck, setting a new fourth place record with 79,873 passengers.
• During 2006 all of the six months have set new record volumes.

Northwestern Air announced that they will be introducing Saskatoon direct service (Mondays & Thursdays) to and from Fort McMurray, Yellowknife and Fort Smith, effective July 17/06.

Airport Ambassadors Program

Air travel can be exciting and intimidating all at the same time. The multitude of signs starting with the parking facilities and continuing on inside the terminal with baggage claim and checkpoint regulations is overwhelming.

Comprehension of the Flight Information Display System (FIDS) boards that monitor times and status of flights can mean the difference in successfully making your travel itinerary or getting your trip off to a bad start. Many passengers can be confused in the hustle and bustle of an airport environment and long to be in a comfortable, stable environment like they're accustomed to. In continuing with the Saskatoon John G. Diefenbaker International Airport's "friendly" environment, we have embarked on an Ambassador Program to help alleviate traveler's stress.

At Saskatoon, we have had volunteer airport ambassadors available throughout the Airport during various times of the year to answer your questions, provide directions or offer needed assistance. The Airport Ambassador "Christmas Season" Program has been in operation for more than ten years and we now would like to move forward with a full-time program of ambassadorship, and even extend the parameters of the program to train them to be tour guides and assist with VIP events or other non-routine airport-related activities. Our plans are to start small and develop and fine-tune the program as it evolves.

CONGRATULATIONS SYL & IVADELLE KULYK

The selection committee of "100 People 100 Reasons" have chosen two of our Saskatoon Airport Ambassadors – Syl Kulyk and Ivadelle Kulyk to be recognized. This centennial initiative is a partnership between CTV Saskatoon and Imagery and the 100 people will be profiled for their efforts in helping make Saskatoon a great place to live. Syl and Ivadelle will be featured on August 14, 2006 in the CTV News. Syl and Ivadelle Kulyk are part of a great volunteer team for Saskatoon.

Saskatoon Airport has a Rucker's Express Games Room. Located across from Tim Horton's near the attractions display area of the terminal building, offering a variety of games for your entertainment.

Saskatoon Shines Reception Centre

The Saskatoon Shines Reception Centre is available to organizations within the community to use as the welcome point for visitors coming to their special event or function in Saskatoon.

The Reception Centre is located near the arrivals area and baggage pick-up area in the Terminal building.

The Saskatoon Shines Reception Centre is made available by the Saskatoon Airport Authority free of charge.

Community Showcase

The Saskatoon Airport Authority is committed to making the Saskatoon Airport a venue that showcases our community, celebrating our strengths and successes (industry, education, innovation), historical background and people of Saskatoon and Saskatchewan. We are delighted with our newest additions:

A Lloyd Pinay sculpture "Message in the Wind II", and diorama which is on loan from Saskatchewan Property Management. This piece was acquired from the Lieutenant Governor Gala event honoring Saskatchewan's Centennial. This new addition is located in the second floor holdroom.

The Saskatchewan Aviation Council's Aviation Wall of Fame, honoring the leaders and builders of aviation in Saskatchewan. This showcase is located directly across from the airline check-in counters.

As well, a Community Display board which presently features SREDA and City of Saskatoon Centennial signage. This showcase is located in the arrivals area close to baggage delivery.

We are proud to provide our customers with an atmosphere that is pleasant and welcoming, as well as provide a "Great" first and last impression of the City of Saskatoon and surrounding community.

Groundside Parking Redevelopment Project

This three phase 5.5 million dollar project began in late April. The first phase of the Groundside Parking Redevelopment Project involves the installation of some new storm sewer pipe, excavation, earthwork, compaction and asphalt installation on a new airport access road. The new access road is required to incorporate all of the existing and new parking stalls within the perimeter of the roadway. Completion of phase 1 was scheduled for mid to late June however the almost continuous rain and inclement weather this spring has put the project behind schedule by approximately 4 weeks.

Phase two of this project encompasses the installation of a new parking kiosk, all electrical installations including new parking lot lighting, roadway lighting and electrification of the parking stalls. New parking lot entrance and exit equipment is also part of this phase of work. During phase two the public will approach the Air Terminal Building on the new road constructed in phase one. Entry to the public parking lot will remain in the same location throughout phase two.

Phase three of the Groundside Parking Redevelopment Project includes the relocation of the entry and exit points in the newly expanded lot, opening of the new parking lot kiosk and finish work in the areas of the old exit and entry points within the lot. It is anticipated that this phase and in fact the completion of the project will be in mid October weather permitting.
